After the success of previous years, this year’s IBC kick-off will again consist of an Investment Banking Training by Peter Whiting. During the training, several topics will be discussed which are important when considering a career in banking. The training will cover the following topics:
• The different roles within an Investment Bank, and the skills you need to succeed in them;
• The importance of understanding the culture within a Bank, and your chosen department;
• The selection process, including interviews and assessment centres.
Peter Whiting Peter Whiting was the Chief Operating Officer of European Equity Research at UBS from 2007 to 2011. Industry surveys, notably Extel and Institutional Investor, consistently named UBS as the best European equities research house for the ten years from 2002 onwards.
As one element of his role, Peter had responsibility for graduate recruitment and training within the Equity Research business, including the department’s summer intern programme. He both interviewed candidates himself and oversaw the hiring decision-making process overall. He also chaired the European Equities Graduate Steering Committee at UBS, the body that determined strategy for all aspects of graduate recruitment and training for the whole Equities business. He has over ten years’ experience of interviewing candidates, both as part of the graduate recruitment programme and as a hiring line manager.
Prior to taking up the role of COO, he gained some 20 years’ experience as an equities analyst, winning industry awards in his own right and leading the UK part of the top-ranked UBS pan-European small and mid-cap research team. Peter is now non-executive chair of Kooth plc, and a non-executive director on the boards of FDM Group plc and D4t4 Solutions plc., and provides consultancy services to a leading global investment bank and other businesses.
